reflection
The simplest way to grow fast.
FIRST CLASS REFLECTION.
16 OCTOBER 2021
Starting the public speaking class again as a semester 3 student has special meanings to me. When I was in my secondary school, my passion was all in public speaking (not studies), I used to host various concerts, school events, competitions, and even grand dinners outside. I love the feeling of having numerous audiences sitting below stage listening to my words and the applause which to me, represents pride and recognition.
During my semester two, I participated in a Chinese public speaking competition organized by UUM students and made into semi-finals. But unfortunately, I did not win a place to compete in the final round, because I was tremendously nervous, forgotten my script and paused in the middle of my speech. As the judges said, if my attitude towards the competition would be more neutral, not being too keen to win, I would have performed better. After the competition, I did not settle myself down and participated in two national level public speaking competition also, without surprise I lost again.
All these experiences inspired me to reflect on my attitude about public speaking, I love being a star on stage like Steve Jobs performing when he introduces his products on stage. But the question is, how can I cross over this barrier and finally put myself into the right place so I could perform my best. This in my third semester, and I wish I could find an answer through the class.
As about the class today, helping madam to redo the voting session is indeed a memorable event for me because, I once again could help the class and madam to solve problems fast. I was trained to do rush and fast jobs while I was in my secondary school, being a secretary of the orchestra. All concerts, activities permission letters and etc, were always required to complete fast without any mistakes, so I was used to the tempo of doing immediate works.
But what makes me reflect is that university is no more a place to think and do simple things. Not only assignments have to be done in a mature and well-organized manner, even during daily problem solving and minor events also, must be done in a matured way. I’m glad that the class today again incite my passion into solving problems and improving myself. Anyhow, I’m expecting the following lessons especially is we are given chances to speak and do sharing in the class, that would be amazing for me!
It’s happy to be in Madam’s class again !
second lesson Reflection
23 october 2021
The lesson today is very eye-opening not only because we defragmented communication in a very detailed manner in different aspects, but also we learnt about protocols in depth.
Firstly, we discussed on the summary of the videos : "What is communication", "Barriers of Communication", "Speech Purpose and Central Idea Development", "Audience Analysis" and "Speech organization. I was very surprised by the discussion because i once thought public speaking is just intuitional based and can be done in impromptu manner. Today's lesson let me realize my ignorance, being a public speaker. I learnt that public speaking requires great plans and depth preparations to perform well.
Secondly is the lecture about protocols, not only did we learn about event protocols but also personal image and very detailed guide in personal ethics. I would say this lesson covers thoroughly about event organizing, professional social skills and personal presentation skills. I believe that lesson today will be a great reference for me in being a well-presented person during every social events.
All in all i really love the class and the detailed discussions today. Honestly i didn't know that public speakers should be good and proficient in protocols but the lesson today gave me an overview on being a well-presented public speaker.

third LESSON REFLECTION
30 OCTOBER 2021
This is our first remote lesson of this semester which we were required to read the materials and videos given by madam on the Online Learning Portal and make a summary on Audience Analysis , then draft as speech that would be videotaped as your individual assignment. Today is indeed productive because by analyzing the materials, I tend to learn about the factors to consider when analyzing audiences in a detailed manner.
The very interesting part of the lesson today ( which is also my favorite part) was the script drafting, its is really fun for me because I can instantly make use of the information I learnt from the remote learning by applying them in my speech, and also I am really excited to have the chance to draft a script creatively and freely ! However, the one thing I'm unsure about after the lesson today is the extend of my learnings, did I fully absorb the knowledge ? Am I ready to put them in action and analyze the audience accurately then amaze them with my speech? How well can I make it ? These are my doubts.
Having the experience in few public speaking competitions and being the host for few events, I have self-learnt some knowledge on audience analysis and had few attempts to apply them. The lesson today is still new to me because I had not learn this skill systematically and academically. I believe the lesson today is going to help me not only to shine on stage but also on interpersonal communications, class presentations or even job interviews, because I know how to analyze the listening ones and plan my strategy either to amaze them or to convince them.
Speaking about the difficulty of the lesson is that I can't access to madam's experience or some case studies examples interactively and responsively through remote learning. Having madam's explanation and examples I believe we could have learn better and even master on audience analysis. Not to say its a spoon feeding process, but when we are listening to madam explaining and sharing some examples, we would start to rethink some similar scenes within our memory. There we start to reflect and improve.
Anyhow despite its a remote learning, still It is fun and interesting to me !

Forth LESSON REFLECTION
6 NOVEMBER 2021
We did not go through much teachings today but spent the lesson productively in gaining guidance from madam to finish our assignments. Madam briefly explained our group task which consist of two parts, Part A and Part B.
In Part A, we require to prepare a 20 minutes video about public speaking etiquette with reference to the articles uploaded in the online learning platform. We also need to prepare an infographic which consist of the points of the video we prepared. For part B, each of us have to evaluate our group members based on their attitude in the group task. After the briefing, madam allow us carry out group discussion in any ways. So, we conduct it using WhatsApp to distribute the tasks and discussed of our theme for our video. We spontaneously brainstormed a lot of creative ideas and came to a mutual agreement to use google meet style for our presentation (because the Squid game style which I suggested was technically too complicate). After the deciding the theme and assigning each tasks, we set several internal due dates for our group assignment.
1. Distribution of topics
- Intro and taboo- Shuva
-Methods of correct voice projection- CK
- Methods of controlling and overcoming fears - Fiqa
-rules and regulations -Michelle
-appropriateness of language - Tira
-obstacles and conclusion- Tasha
2. Video
Theme: Google Meet Style
Attire: Formal attire (Black and Blue)
Group Deadline; send to Ck (20/11)
Assignment Deadline: 27/11
3. Poster
Group Deadline to send Shuva: 18/11
Actual assignment deadline: 27/11

FIFTH LESSON REFLECTION
13 NOVEMBER 2021
What again a fruitful lesson!! Today we learnt about arranging Information and Ideas to form speech which is very vital to be learnt as a public speaker. With madam’s guidance and teachings, we learnt about the basic structures of a speech: intro, body, and conclusion. We got to know in depth of the functions of each part of the speech and the mission within during public speaking.
Besides, a major part of the teaching today emphasizes on 6 organizing patterns. First, Chronological which can be used to explain about historical events by arranging the speech according to the logical flow. Next, Topical, which was a pattern that develop our main points discretely and linking them together within the opening and ending of our speech. Next Spatial which to me is the most interesting one! By using this pattern, we should arrange the main points in a very cinematic or to be specific, a scene-to-scene manner. I’m glad to be able to contribute an example of spatial speech about describing UUM, because it ensures my understanding about this pattern is right. Following is comparative pattern which we can use to discuss the differences and similarities between 2 or more affairs analytically. The fifth pattern we learnt today was problem solution pattern which we use to talk about a problem and a solution which most salesperson (I suppose) and politicians utilize in organizing their speeches to convince the audience. The last pattern that we learnt today is casual pattern which first addresses some cause and then shares what effects resulted.
Next, we learnt about outlining our speech, but the question is why out lining is important? This is because creating an outline can be used provide us with guidance to choose our speech direction so our speech would be sticked closely to the title and organized well. What to proceed after an outline was prepare, is to draft the speech which elaborates more according to our points. We should also not ignore the importance of linking our points together with transitional statement, so the audience are able to follow up easily while listening to our speech. In the end of the speech, do not forget to summarize our points so the audience could recap the important message delivered by us in the speech.
Before we end, madam invited us to share our past experiences in giving speeches. Many students shared their experiences and in return, madam provided her professional suggestions and guidance to help us overcome the obstacles we met. It was only a 2-hour lesson but to me, it feels like going through a whole day public speaking workshop! What again a productive lesson!

SIXTH LESSON REFLECTION
20 NOVEMBER 2021
The lesson today was substituted with the event organized by Pusat Ko-kurikulum of UUM about cherishing the sacrifice or our parents. The event started at 10 am but has delayed to almost 11am due to technical issues. The event was conducted interestingly with jazz band singing performed by Dr Zaki (if I had not mistaken) , drama presented by UUM students, touching talk by Mr Shadat Nordin and many more interesting activities were conducted.
What amazed me along the event was the flow and organization of the performance were so well planned and has touched my emotions. Despite not being able to enjoy the event in an offline manner and indulge my self within the ambience that the organizing committees would like to create , it was indeed fun and meaningful , plus it relaxed my tense nerves while rushing with my assignments. All in all , it is a very excellent event that successfully deliver deep and meaningful message to us .

Seventh LESSON REFLECTION
27 NOVEMBER 2021
People used to say time flies, but today I learnt that flying is too slow to describe time flow, it just disappear in a sudden. Today is our last class of this semester and also the second last semester being in Madam's public speaking class in UUM. Madam started the lesson today by discussing the mode of study with us in the upcoming semester. Michelle , our class president was also being assigned to record and gather our suggestions with a google doc made by her efficiently. Then, madam proceed reminding us about the due dates for all assignments.
We also discussed about the recording of personal speeches which madam require us to record ourselves from top to our knees to show our speaking gestures. We then proceeded to the discussion about the group video and talked bout the lime limits and madam has answered several inquiries of a few classmates. The discussion soon shifted to the infographic and madam has assisted few groups in reading through their infographic and providing her suggestions for improvements. We also together seen through the work of other groups and has inspired new ideas to improve our infographic. In the end of the class, we were all feeling down as the classes for this semester has ended so fast and we had not ready to stop enjoying being in classes taught by Madam. In the end of the class, madam reminded us to complete our tasks on time and submit on 2 December 2021. The class has also ended early with the wishes and ending speech given by madam, so we would have more time to proceed with our assigned tasks.
Lastly, I really appreciate madam for teaching us skills and knowledge about public speaking and event managements. I sincerely hope that we could continue improving together and learning from madam in the next semester in UUM which we could be together face to face. That would surely be full of fun and interesting moments!!!

PEER ASSESSMENT
Firstly, I really appreciate to be able to work with a group that has no objections towards creativity and being so enthusiastic while preparing a presentation. I can still recall the moments when we all suddenly initiate a discussion at about 1 am and coincidently, everyone was still awake so we engaged into a very relaxed and happy discussion on the creatives of our presentation. Everyone in this group are being very helpful and unite while working together, this is what we call a team. Since the second semester when we established Espresso as the name of our group, I can’t believe that until today, it has been a common identity within us, this is so great because we are all liked minded people and we are together learning , helping and growing. I had never worked with a group that has 0 conflict, to be very honest, we never had any arguments even our ideas conflicted but yet we manage to resolve it in peace.
1. Shuvalakshimey A/P Veethasalam (278019)
Shuva is always a great speaker that has been impressing me since we first know each other. She is really active coordinating and helping us in doing the assignments. Despite the fact that she has really amazing confidence, humble is always the best word to describe her. One more thing, being the most creative group we always have amazing ideas to be made, but we used to ignored the fact that our task is still an official school assessment. Here Shuva play the role as an auditor to make sure we are not going too far and stay rational while dealing with our explosive ideas.
2. Michelle Chung Mei Lin (281104)
Michelle, our class president for the semester, is like a big sister to us . When we have conflicts of ideas she is the one who resolves the conflict and direct us to an agreement that we were all satisfied with. She is also really helpful especially when reminding us and ensuring that we are doing our tasks given by madam and provide assistance when we need. A great role model of a leader.
3. Nurul Natasha Afiqah (279012)
Natasha is a very polite and low profile person in our group, yet she has a shining character in which she is always able to finish her tasks on time. She is also a very reliable person who has done a lot in making the video editing process simple and fast by ensuring her part is flawless.
4. Noor Athirah Binti Ahmad Faizal (280091)
Athirah is a very creative and active speaker in our group. I can still remember when she contacted me on Whatsapp asking me about the best way to send me her video and she said “cuz i nk mudahkan u punya kerja”. This might sound common but to me it really mean a lot and I appreciate her for being helpful to us. (And reminding me to finish the peer assessment on time)
5. Nurafiqa Hanis Bt Mustafa Kamal (280110)
Fiqa is a very punctual person, as she is also managed to submit her tasks on time. In my impression she is a very quiet girl who might be very shy while presenting or communicating with us. But to my surprise , NO ! She is very active in providing her opinion and playing a very assistive role in the preparation of our presentation video.
