There was a man who studied philosophy in the University of Harvard. One day he talks to his friend, “hey, why don’t we create a webpage for the students to vote for the prettiest girl in the school?” and his friend says, “yeah why not”, later he says again “why not we make it a business?”
Now if this is your friend speaking to you, what would you say?
“Yes ! let's go !!” or “No, I’m having too many assignments” maybe “I rather spend time sleeping”?
Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen, I am CK Lam matric number 276828 , a semester 4 student studying Bachelor of International Affairs Management in UUM. Also, I have another role, I am the founder and CEO of Quoffe Coffee, an online café that explores possibilities to make the world better with coffee.
Today I want to change your view about your future with a new word, Uni-preneurship. In full, university – entrepreneurship, learning about doing business in the university. I know you may be very curious, “who is this international affairs student talking to me about business?” Let me tell you why !
Firstly, Unipreneurship prepares us for our future career. When speaking about accumulating skills for future career, we often thought about hosting events, joining clubs and participating in competitions. However, let’s not ignore the forth choice, entrepreneurship. Building a business helps us to think on the perspective of a business owner, which would help us to understand our employer better in the future workplace. Besides, as an entrepreneur, you could be fighting alone, so it trains your multi-tasking skills, and brings you out from your comfort zone to learn new skills that you might think they are useless. All these skills are definitely demanding and will be the star of your resume!
Secondly, Unipreneurship expands our horizon against the world. My dear friends, entrepreneurship is not only just buying and selling, it’s a process to study and adapt ourselves into the world’s economy system. What do we study to run a business? Technology, Science, Logistics, Supply Chains, Economy, Government Policies, Investments, Banking, Insurance and many more. For example, do you know how many countries have been involved in manufacturing one pencil? More than 5 countries in which some will make the lead, some make the barrel, some make the paint, if there’s an eraser there will be a few more countries and industries involved. See, business is covering a huge scope of knowledge, engaging into unipreneurship makes us start to study them with unlimited hands-on opportunities. There, your scope of thinking starts widening, expanding over the globe, connecting points to points, and then, you will see, a whole new world!
Lastly, Unipreneurship brings you trustable relationships. I want to share with you my favorite quote, good friendships come from good partnerships. Good partnership is built when we start attracting people who think like us and have similar values to us. Then we form a business team together we, share ideas, elevate thoughts, face obstacles and support each other. We fight for the same goal; we strive for the same future, and we hold each other tight. All these moments activate the chemical reaction and then you’ll realize how much would your partners be trustable after all these times. Of course, not only our partners will be our most trustworthy friends, as the process will also tell us how supportive our friends are in our business. It’s a process of filtering people who would truly support us and think for our good. Good friendships come from good partnerships.
Engaging into Unipreneurship is not about defining your career before your graduation, it’s a process of completing ourselves before we step into our career. It enriches us with new skills set, broadens our horizon, and makes us into magnets, then we attract like-minded people to come together, becoming partners and forming new friendships. So, get moving, start a business, keep it small at first, learn whatever you can, elevate yourself, grab opportunities, and then forge yourself into diamonds, shine!
I know there is a question in your mind now, “Really? But can I?”
Remember the story I told at the beginning? The guy that just comes out of a playful idea and makes it into a business with his friend.
His name is Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook.
It's not about whether you can or cannot, it's all about your answer, when a guy comes to you saying, “I have a great idea, why don't we make it into a business?”
What is your answer? Yes, or No?
That is all it matters.
Thank you.
